It was 3:00 AM. The only light in the Master Suite came from the glow of Victoria’s laptop screen. Hope was finally asleep in the bassinet next to the bed.
Victoria was clearing out her inbox, a mindless task to wind down after the adrenaline of her first day back. *Delete. Archive. Delete.*
She hovered over the “Spam” folder. It was filled with phishing scams and promotional offers. She was about to hit “Empty All” when a subject line caught her eye.
*Subject: Zurich Inquiries.*
It was dated two weeks ago–the day the power came back on after the blizzard. Victoria frowned. Her thumb hovered over the delete key. It was probably nothing. A banking error. A scam.
But the instinct that had helped her survive Seraphina Rivers and Julianna Vane twitched. *Alistair hid money,* a voice in her head whispered. *He kept secrets in the dark.*
She clicked the flag icon, marking the email for review, and moved it to her secure folder. She closed the laptop, unaware that she had just opened the door to the past.
