The following morning, Dr. Maya Khan arrived at the front gates. She carried a heavy medical bag.
“I’m here to check on Lady Beatrice’s blood pressure,” Maya told the security team. “She has a history of hypertension, and stress is a trigger.”
Alistair met her in the foyer. “She is fragile, Doctor. Do be gentle.”
“I’m always gentle, Mr. Croft,” Maya said coolly.
She went up to Beatrice’s room, but as she passed Alistair’s study, she paused. Pretending to adjust her shoe, she opened her bag slightly. Inside, a handheld frequency scanner–disguised as a glucose monitor–lit up like a Christmas tree.
The screen flashed red: *SIGNAL DETECTED. AUDIO/VIDEO. ENCRYPTED UPLINK.*
Maya found William in the hallway a moment later. She didn’t speak. She simply tapped her ear and then pointed to the ceiling, the walls, and even the lamp. She held up five fingers, then made a sweeping motion. *Everything. Everywhere.*
William nodded imperceptibly. The “House of Glass” was fully operational.
