The rain lashed against the windows of the Sterling-Khan Clinic, blurring the lights of the city. Inside, Sophie Laurent-Croft sat on the edge of the exam table, shivering despite the warm blanket Dr. Lucas Hale had wrapped around her.
She had fled the “Impossible House” an hour ago, unable to endure another dinner watching William stare at the Guest House.
“He doesn’t see me, Lucas,” Sophie whispered, clutching the tea he had made her. “He looks right through me to find her.”
Lucas sat beside her, maintaining the respectful distance of a friend who wanted to be more. “You know you can leave, Sophie. You don’t have to be a martyr for his drama.”
Sophie looked down at her wedding ring, the metal feeling heavy like a shackle. Tears spilled over her lashes. “I thought I could save him. I thought if I loved him enough, it would fill the hole she left.” She looked up at Lucas, and voiced the truth she had been hiding since the altar. “I think… I think I made a terrible mistake.”
