Julian Sterling paced the small living room of their apartment, the “Happy Ending” domesticity disrupted by the mystery. He threw a tablet onto the coffee table. It displayed two photos side-by-side: William Croft and Malcolm Fotheringham.
“Look at the earlobes,” Julian insisted, zooming in. “Look at the hairline. That isn’t a cousin. That is a genetic mirror.”
Maya Khan, still wearing her scrubs, picked up the tablet. She studied the images with a doctor’s eye. “Identical,” she whispered. “But Beatrice only announced one birth.”
